Evolution Korea
Up until recently, the Korean scientific community avoided working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over many generations the changes could lead to the emergence new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may result in the creation of completely new species.
The term "evolution" originates from the Latin word"evolution" which means unraveling or revealing, however the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Over time this genetic variation can result in the development of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. The shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains how Earth and all its living species came to be. It is also a foundation of biology and helps scientists to learn how living organisms function and grow. It is crucial that science educators stand up for the teaching evolution. In some countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this support vary. Certain scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions such as developing new medicines, while others do so to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are just curious, while others have a strong religious belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are generally divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and that the universe and life on Earth began only recently.
OECs may be less known, but their beliefs are as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is an untruth.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles like natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their view "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." The theory suggests that God creates original species and allows them to evolve over time. In the end the evolutionary changes result in new species similar to the original ones.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.

Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this effort. STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear however, they could be related to religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.
On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
